Overview
The high Himalayas, the Gods' dwelling, is commonly regarded to be a summer resort. Driving to the most beautiful Himalayan places is out of the question since they are only accessible by high mountain routes that get snowed out during the winter season. However, it is a little-known fact that the Spiti region can be visited all year.
Spiti is essentially a secret enclave of India to which the BRO has built roads due to Tibet, and therefore China, being only across the border. However, the rocky and steep mountains that dominate this region have not readily yielded tarmac suitable surfaces. The roads are narrow and prone to landslides, with crumbling edges. The BRO's ingenuity resides in the fact that they built the roads encircling the slope at a low height, which means that, unlike the road from Manali to Leh, Ladakh, the road from Shimla to Kaza, Spiti, stays mainly motorable during the winter. I say primarily because it may close for a day or five because of significant snowfall, but the PWD usually clears it.
Spiti, being in a rain shadow zone, does not get continuous snowfall. It may snow for a day or two, although these snowfalls are seldom. Because of the region's consistent sub-zero temperatures throughout the winter, snow remains on the ground until summer, around the end of April or May.
It is not your typical Himalayan journey, and you must make some preparations before embarking on this difficult but breathtaking road trip.
