Overview
The Taj Mahal is a world-renowned architectural masterpiece located in Agra, India. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal stands as an exquisite symbol of love and devotion. Construction began in 1632, and the monument was completed in 1653.
Designed by the Persian architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum that blends elements of Islamic, Persian, and Indian architecture. It is situated on the southern bank of the Yamuna River and is set within a vast charbagh, or Persian-style garden, featuring symmetrical pathways, reflecting pools, and fountains.
The main structure consists of a central white marble dome flanked by four smaller domes and four towering minarets. The facade is adorned with intricate inlay work using semi-precious stones, forming elegant floral patterns and calligraphy from the Quran. The interior houses the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan, while the actual tombs are located in a crypt below.
The Taj Mahal is not only celebrated for its architectural beauty but also for its symbolic significance as a testament to eternal love. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Taj Mahal attracts millions of visitors from around the world who marvel at its timeless elegance, stunning craftsmanship, and the poignant love story that inspired its creation.
