Overview
Gomukh is a glacier in the Garhwal Mountains in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The glacier is named after the Hindi word "Gomukh," which means "cow's mouth," because its snout, or terminus, resembles the mouth of a cow. Gomukh is one of the main sources of the Ganges, which is revered in Hinduism as a sacred river.
The glacier is approximately 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) long and is located at an elevation of around 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) above sea level. Several of the tallest peaks in the area surround it, including Mount Shivling, Meru Peak, and Bhagirathi III.
Gomukh is a prominent pilgrimage and trekking site. The journey to Gomukh begins at Gangotri, which is about 18 kilometres (11.2 miles) from the glacier. The journey takes two to three days to complete, depending on the speed and physical fitness of the trekker.
Trekkers who reach Gomukh will be treated to a breathtaking view of the glacier and surrounding peaks. However, due to climate change and other environmental variables, the glacier's size has been decreasing over time.
Overall, Gomukh is a magnificent and significant location in the Garhwal Mountains, drawing thousands of people each year to admire its natural beauty and spiritual importance.
